A Case Study in Orientation on Refugees and Forced Displacement: How Kashida Supported UNHCR Lebanon

In October 2023, Kashida partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Lebanon and the Issam Fares Institute to create an online academic course in the field of refugee studies. This course aims to address the challenges of forced displacement and to sensitize students of different universities in Lebanon and the region around the subject of Refugees and ensure that terminologies to be used correctly. In the hope that this course can evolve into a credited course or even a full program. Here’s how we tackled the challenges and delivered a solution that makes a real impact.

The Challenge: Balancing Depth and Design_

The primary challenge was to ensure that the complex and often theoretical concepts of human rights were presented in a relatable and engaging manner. Our goal was to make the content not only interesting but also practical, allowing learners to see how HRBA could be integrated into their everyday work in the Syrian context. This involved crafting a course that catered to both newcomers to the human rights field and those with some prior knowledge, ensuring that all participants could learn effectively and apply what they learned. Additionally, the course needed to meet stringent accessibility standards to accommodate learners with varying audio-visual needs.

The Solution: Creative Precision_

To address these challenges, we ensured that the content strictly adhered to the agreed-upon learning objectives and aligned with the needs and expectations of the target audience. We provided clear guidance on the appropriate depth and scope of content for each topic, ensuring relevance and accessibility for learners.

To overcome Moodle’s limitations, we conducted internal brainstorming sessions to design creative solutions that maintained high-quality standards. These efforts resulted in a course rich in engagement and interaction, tailored to the technical and pedagogical requirements.

The Results: Driving Impact Through Thoughtful Design_

The course was well-received, with around 30 students registering—an impressive outcome for an elective. UNHCR expressed great satisfaction with the final product, highlighting the course’s balance of depth and clarity. By overcoming content and technical challenges, Kashida successfully delivered an engaging learning experience that not only met the needs of the Issam Fares Institute and UNHCR but also empowered students with a nuanced understanding of refugee studies, emphasizing its relevance in the MENA region. This project underscores the importance of designing education that bridges expertise and comprehension to address global challenges effectively.
