Scaling Advocacy Through Digital Learning The Launch of Helem Academy
Across the SWANA region, access to structured, culturally grounded education on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Sexual Characteristics (SOGIESC), and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) remains limited. While conversations around these topics are growing globally, accurate and regionally relevant Arabic-language resources are scarce.
To address this gap, Helem partnered with Kashida to launch Helem Academy, the first Arabic-language digital academy of its kind in the SWANA region dedicated to structured SOGIESC and SRHR education.
Launched in early 2026, the academy transforms years of in-person advocacy and training into a scalable, bilingual digital learning platform hosted on Helem’s microsite.
Through intentional Learning Experience Design, high-quality production, and bilingual accessibility, the program extends Helem’s advocacy into a sustainable, region-wide digital ecosystem.

KEY INFORMATION_
Redefining Access to Inclusive Education (The Challenge) _
Across SWANA, learners often encounter fragmented or inaccurate information about SOGIESC and SRHR. Most comprehensive educational resources are available primarily in English and frequently fail to reflect regional legal, cultural, and social realities. This gap leaves youth, activists, professionals, and marginalized communities without reliable, structured learning pathways.
Core concepts are often misunderstood or conflated, reinforcing confusion instead of clarity. Without comprehensive education, advocacy efforts risk being inconsistent, and professionals working in health, legal, and social sectors lack foundational frameworks to engage confidently and responsibly.
For Helem, another pressing challenge was scale. Since its founding in 2001, the organization has delivered impactful face-to-face advocacy and training. However, in-person programming limited reach geographically. Expanding beyond physical workshops required more than digitizing slides; it demanded the creation of a cohesive, high-quality digital academy capable of preserving advocacy integrity while extending access across borders.
The goal was clear, which was to build a structured, culturally grounded, bilingual learning ecosystem that could provide clarity, correct misconceptions, and reach learners at scale.

Designing a Digital Academy with Purpose (The Solution) _
To establish Helem Academy, Kashida worked closely with Helem’s subject matter experts, advocacy leaders, and program teams to translate deep expertise into engaging digital learning experiences.
Helem’s SMEs led the development and validation of content across all three courses, ensuring accuracy, inclusivity, and alignment with lived experiences in the region. Kashida’s role was to shape this content into structured, accessible, and interactive learning journeys.
Together, the teams developed:
- Introduction to SOGIESC: A foundational course recommended before progressing further.
- SOGIESC (Advanced Level): Expanding on key concepts for deeper understanding and professional application.
- Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR): Addressing rights-based frameworks and health education within regional realities.
Each course is approximately two hours long, self-paced, and concludes with a certificate of completion. Designed for learners aged 18-24 as a primary audience, alongside activists, professionals, policymakers, community leaders, and the broader public, the academy ensures content remains relevant across multiple learner segments.
The learning design incorporated multimedia elements, including videos, animation, infographics, and interactive components, to simplify complex terminology and reinforce understanding. Careful UX/UI design ensured clarity and sensitivity when navigating challenging subject matter.
Importantly, every course was produced in both Arabic and English, expanding accessibility while maintaining cultural nuance. The academy is hosted on Helem’s microsite, providing a centralized and scalable digital hub for regional learners.
A Milestone for Inclusive Digital Learning in SWANA (The Results) _
Launched in early 2026, Helem Academy marks a significant milestone for inclusive digital education in the region.
For the first time, learners can access a cohesive, bilingual, certificate-based pathway covering foundational and advanced SOGIESC education alongside SRHR within one structured platform.
Although still newly launched, early feedback from Helem has been overwhelmingly positive. The organization praised the academy’s high production quality, user-friendly interface, and alignment with learner needs.
The self-paced format allows learners to engage with complex topics thoughtfully, while interactive components enhance comprehension and retention.
Most importantly, the academy expands Helem’s impact beyond geographical constraints.
What was once limited to in-person sessions in specific locations can now reach learners across the SWANA region, sustainably and at scale.
By combining subject matter expertise with intentional Learning Experience Design, Helem Academy establishes a long-term digital infrastructure capable of supporting advocacy, professional development, and community leadership. It demonstrates how digital education, when thoughtfully designed, can extend mission-driven work far beyond physical boundaries.
Through this partnership, advocacy did not simply move online; it evolved into a scalable, bilingual, and structured regional learning platform built for lasting impact.
