TRANSFORMING LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR THE DIGITAL AGE WITH KASHIDA
In today’s fast-evolving digital landscape, nonprofit leaders must be equipped with the skills to harness technology for impactful change. Recognizing this need, the NetHope Digital Leadership Institute (NDLI) created the “Leadership Skills for a Digital Age” online course, designed to empower nonprofit executives to drive digital transformations, safeguard data privacy, and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation. Originally delivered in a blended format over 12 weeks, with weekly live sessions facilitated by an instructor, the course was effective but required a new approach to increase its sustainability and reach.

KEY INFORMATION_
NAVIGATING THE SHIFT TO A SUSTAINABLE, SELF-PACED LEARNING EXPERIENCE_
NetHope, a consortium of over 60 leading global nonprofits, approached Kashida with a clear mission: convert the existing course into a fully self-paced experience without losing its impact. The transition presented several challenges, including sustainability, as the new format needed to be sustainable, allowing continuous learning without the need for live facilitation. Also, the other challenge was the ‘reach’ as the course had to attract learners who preferred self-paced learning, as well as maintaining high levels of learner engagement and course completion.
Moreover, the course needed to engage learners practically, guiding them to reflect on relevant problems in their professional context. This reflection had to be captured as they navigated the course, all without the benefit of synchronous facilitation. The existing course contained a wealth of resources, which also needed to be integrated in a way that didn’t overwhelm learners, with a limit of 2.5 hours per module.
Additionally, the course was hosted on an LMS platform with certain restrictions in terms of structure, interactions, and design. Adapting the learning journey within these constraints was essential to the success of the project.
INNOVATIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT AND PRACTICAL LEARNING_
To meet these challenges, Kashida undertook a comprehensive redesign of the course’s information architecture, ensuring a clear, smooth, and consistent learning journey with the inclusion of key elements. The first was Interactive and Visual Content; as core content was delivered through engaging visual elements and interactive components, complemented by easy access to additional resources for those wishing to delve deeper. Secondly is the Case Studies and Discussion Forums; as to foster peer learning, we integrated case studies with discussion forums, enabling learners to share their thoughts and learn from each other’s perspectives. Lastly is the inclusion of Practical Engagement Tools. We developed an interactive object that allowed learners to enter their problem statement at the beginning of the course, edit it as they progressed, and take notes on each module. These reflections were automatically recorded and compiled into a downloadable PDF, which learners could save and print at the course’s conclusion.
